Many common French verbs end in -re (like attendre, vendre, répondre). They follow a simple pattern: drop -re and add the endings. The d stays in all forms, and il/elle/on gets no extra ending.
The Pattern
Drop -re, add: -s, -s, —, -ons, -ez, -ent
Using attendre (to wait) as the model:
| Subject | Ending | Conjugation | IPA |
|---|---|---|---|
| je | -s | j’attends | [ʒa.tɑ̃] |
| tu | -s | tu attends | [ty a.tɑ̃] |
| il/elle/on | — | il attend | [il a.tɑ̃] |
| nous | -ons | nous attendons | [nu.za.tɑ̃.dɔ̃] |
| vous | -ez | vous attendez | [vu.za.tɑ̃.de] |
| ils/elles | -ent | ils attendent | [il.za.tɑ̃d] |
Key points:
- The d is kept in all forms
- No extra ending for il/elle/on — just the stem
- The d is pronounced in ils/elles form: [a.tɑ̃d]
