Très, beaucoup, peu, trop / Quantity adverbs

These adverbs express degree and quantity in French. They modify adjectives, verbs, or other adverbs to indicate intensity. Understanding when to use each one and their position in the sentence is essential for natural expression.

The Adverbs

Très (Very)

Used with adjectives and adverbs, never with verbs:

• C’est très bon. [sɛ tʁɛ bɔ̃] — It’s very good.
• Elle est très grande. [ɛl ɛ tʁɛ ɡʁɑ̃d] — She is very tall.
• Il parle très bien. [il paʁl tʁɛ bjɛ̃] — He speaks very well.

Beaucoup (A Lot)

Used with verbs and with de + noun:

• J’aime beaucoup le chocolat. [ʒɛm bo.ku lə ʃɔ.kɔ.la] — I like chocolate a lot.
• Il travaille beaucoup. [il tʁa.vaj bo.ku] — He works a lot.
• beaucoup d’amis [bo.ku da.mi] — many friends

Peu / Un peu (Little / A Little)

• J’ai peu de temps. [ʒe pø də tɑ̃] — I have little time.
• Je parle un peu français. [ʒə paʁl œ̃ pø fʁɑ̃.sɛ] — I speak a little French.
• un peu de sucre [œ̃ pø də sykʁ] — a little sugar

Trop (Too Much)

• C’est trop cher. [sɛ tʁo ʃɛʁ] — It’s too expensive.
• Il parle trop. [il paʁl tʁo] — He talks too much.
• trop de travail [tʁo də tʁa.vaj] — too much work
