Nombres ordinaux / Ordinal Numbers

Ordinal numbers indicate position or order: first, second, third, etc. In French, most ordinal numbers are formed by adding -ième to the cardinal number. The main exception is premier (first), which has its own unique form and is the only ordinal that agrees in gender: premier (m) / première (f).

Note: Only premier/première changes for gender. All others ending in -ième are invariable (same form for masculine and feminine).

Note: Deuxième is the standard “second.” Second(e) [sə.ɡɔ̃(d)] exists
but deuxième is used in everyday speech.

• le premier étage [lə pʁə.mje.ʁe.taʒ] — the first floor (UK) / second floor (US)
• le deuxième étage [lə dø.zjɛ.me.taʒ] — the second floor (UK)
• le rez-de-chaussée [lə ʁe.də.ʃo.se] — the ground floor

Dates (Kings, Centuries)

• Louis XIV (quatorze) — but François I^er (premier)
• le XXI^e siècle — the 21st century

Rankings

• Il est arrivé premier. — He came first.
• C’est la première fois. — It’s the first time.
