Les lettres muettes / Silent Letters

In French, many letters are written but not pronounced—French spelling often preserves historical letters that are no longer spoken. Most final consonants are silent, and certain letters in the middle of words can also be silent. Learning these patterns will help you predict pronunciation and speak naturally.

1. Silent Final Consonants

Most consonants at the end of French words are silent.

Silent Letter Examples IPA
-s Paris, trois, français [paʁi], [tʁwa], [fʁɑ̃sɛ]
-t chat, petit, et [ʃa], [pəti], [e]
-d grand, froid, pied [ɡʁɑ̃], [fʁwa], [pje]
-x deux, heureux, prix [dø], [øʁø], [pʁi]
-z chez, nez, riz [ʃe], [ne], [ʁi]
-p trop, beaucoup, coup [tʁo], [boku], [ku]
-g long, sang [lɔ̃], [sɑ̃]

The CaReFuL Rule

The consonants C, R, F, L are usually pronounced at the end of words:

Letter Examples IPA
C avec — with, parc — park, sac — bag [avɛk], [paʁk], [sak]
R pour — for, bonjour — hello, amour — love [puʁ], [bɔ̃ʒuʁ], [amuʁ]
F chef — boss, neuf — nine, œuf — egg [ʃɛf], [nœf], [œf]
L hôtel — hotel, sel — salt, avril — April [otɛl], [sɛl], [avʁil]

Exceptions to CaReFuL: -er verb endings (parler [paʁle], manger [mɑ̃ʒe]), blanc [blɑ̃] — white, gentil [ʒɑ̃ti] — nice

2. The Silent “H”

The letter H is always silent in French. You never hear it!

Word Meaning IPA
heure hour [œʁ]
homme man [ɔm]
hôtel hotel [otɛl]
hiver winter [ivɛʁ]
histoire history/story [istwaʁ]
heureux happy [øʁø]

Two Types of H

  • H muet (silent h) — allows elision and liaison: l’homme [lɔm], l’heure [lœʁ]
  • H aspiré (aspirated h) — blocks elision: le héros [lə eʁo], la honte [la ɔ̃t]

3. Silent “E” at the End

The final -e (without accent) is usually silent but makes the preceding consonant pronounced.

Without -e IPA With -e IPA Difference
petit [pəti] petite [pətit] T is now heard
grand [ɡʁɑ̃] grande [ɡʁɑ̃d] D is now heard
français [fʁɑ̃sɛ] française [fʁɑ̃sɛz] S→Z is now heard
vert [vɛʁ] verte [vɛʁt] T is now heard

More examples of silent final -e:

  • table [tabl] — table
  • France [fʁɑ̃s] — France
  • livre [livʁ] — book
  • porte [pɔʁt] — door

4. Silent Letters in the Middle

Some letters inside words are also silent:
