Le futur proche / Near future

The near future (futur proche) expresses actions about to happen. It’s formed with the verb aller (to go) + an infinitive, similar to “going to” in English.

Formation

aller (conjugated) + infinitive

When to Use

• Immediate future: Je vais partir. [ʒə vɛ paʁ.tiʁ] — I’m about to leave.
• Near future plans: Nous allons voyager cet été. [nu.z‿a.lɔ̃ vwa.ja.ʒe sɛ.t‿e.te] — We’re going to travel this summer.
• Intentions: Je vais apprendre le français. [ʒə vɛ.z‿a.pʁɑ̃dʁ lə fʁɑ̃.sɛ] — I’m going to learn French.

Examples

• Il va pleuvoir. [il va plø.vwaʁ] — It’s going to rain.
• Tu vas aimer ce film. [ty va.z‿ɛ.me sə film] — You’re going to like this movie.
• Elle va arriver demain. [ɛl va a.ʁi.ve də.mɛ̃] — She’s going to arrive tomorrow.
• Nous allons dîner au restaurant. [nu.z‿a.lɔ̃ di.ne o ʁɛs.to.ʁɑ̃] — We’re going to have dinner at a restaurant.

Negation

Put ne… pas around aller:

• Je ne vais pas travailler. [ʒə nə vɛ pa tʁa.va.je] — I’m not going to work.
• Elle ne va pas venir. [ɛl nə va pa və.niʁ] — She’s not going to come.
• Nous n’allons pas sortir. [nu na.lɔ̃ pa sɔʁ.tiʁ] — We’re not going to go out.

Questions

• Tu vas venir? [ty va və.niʁ] — Are you going to come?
• Qu’est-ce que tu vas faire? [kɛs kə ty va fɛʁ] — What are you going to do?
• Où allez-vous manger? [u a.le vu mɑ̃.ʒe] — Where are you going to eat?

Common Mistakes
