SVP, merci / Please, thank you

Politeness is essential in French culture. Using s’il vous plaît and merci isn’t optional — it’s
expected in virtually every interaction.

Saying “Please”

S’il vous plaît [sil vu plɛ] literally means “if it pleases you.” Use it with strangers, in shops,
restaurants, and formal situations. In writing: SVP or svp.

S’il te plaît [sil tə plɛ] is the informal version — use with friends, family, and children. In texting:
STP or stp.

It can go at the beginning or end of a sentence:

• Un café, s’il vous plaît. — A coffee, please.
• S’il vous plaît, un café. — Please, a coffee.

Saying “Thank You”

Important: Merci alone can mean “no, thank you” when declining an offer. To accept, say
