Les accents français: é, è, ê, ë, à, â, etc. / French Accents

French uses 5 accent marks that change how letters are pronounced or distinguish between words that would otherwise look identical. They primarily modify pronunciation (especially on the letter “e”) and are essential for reading and writing French correctly.

The 5 French Accents

Accent French Name English Name Used On
é accent aigu [aksɑ̃ tegy] acute accent e only
è, à, ù accent grave [aksɑ̃ gʁav] grave accent e, a, u

ë, ï, ü tréma [tʁema] diaeresis e, i, u

Only appears on é. Produces a closed [e] sound.

Tip: This is the most common accent in French!

2. L’accent grave (`) — The Grave Accent

Appears on è, à, ù. On “e” it changes pronunciation to an open [ɛ]; on “a” and “u” it distinguishes meaning.

Letter IPA Examples
è [ɛ] mère [mɛʁ] — mother, père [pɛʁ] — father, frère [fʁɛʁ] — brother
à [a] à [a] — to/at, [la] — there, voilà [vwala] — here is

4. Le tréma (¨) — The Diaeresis

Appears on ë, ï, ü. Indicates that two vowels should be pronounced separately, not as a single sound.

ë pronounce separately Noël [nɔɛl] — Christmas, canoë [kanɔe] — canoe
ï pronounce separately naïf [naif] — naive, maïs [mais] — corn, héroïque [eʁɔik] — heroic
